Being Music Director of my college’s radio station has its perks. All kinds of music gets sent to the station, with the hopeful intentions of being played on air, and I’m the one who receives this music. Some of it’s ok, some is the farthest from ok, and few and far between are great.

Sifting through the pile of my inherited albums, I came across many bad ones. Actually all of them were inaudible, except for one. I came across this spacey album cover.

With a sticky note that read “techno. sort of…” The note was “sort of” right, partially.

Dallas Austin is acclaimed for his songwriting and producing abilities, working with the likes of Michael Jackson, Pink, Madonna, Gwen Stefani, TLC, and many others. His solo project is under the moniker of “The Dallas Austin Experience.”

There are countless influences that can be picked out in this music. Everything from modern hip-hop, Daft Punk electronica, to psychedelic fuzzed-out rock a la Jimi Hendrix. His cover of T-Rex’s “Children of the Revolution” has the hippie-funked out vibe, with modern synthesizer edge. The gem on the sampler is “Hot Girls in the Bathroom.” A hip-hop tune with danceable synths, most notably an out of this world synth solo, topped off with the chorus hook of “hot girls in the bathroom.”

His album/movie/experience/project, 8dazeaweakened, “is basically a reality experience based on a girl I knew in Atlanta.” Austin gives the background of the concept on his Myspace.

I met her with my cousin Juan hanging in after parties and stuff. But this particular weakend she told me she had booked her first psych appointment for Monday and that she was gonna party her ass off the whole weakend. I said “Damn that’s strange, maybe I’ll make an album of it or an experience so that everyone could share in it.” I want people to feel music again and actually see the album. So here I have created a real experience with real music and real friends of mine. This is the first of many to come…

This preview/promotional video for the album can be found on his blog.

The sampler says the album is dropping in the spring of this year. Hopefully a clear release date will be announced along with tour dates. That Dallas Austin is one hell of a talented guy.
